A cot is a piece of furniture that is used for babies, infants, campers and travelers. Baby cots are used for babies while travel cots and camping cots are for travelers and campers. Baby cots usually come with elevated sides to prevent the baby from falling from the cot. With a baby cot, you will also have to buy some cot baby bedding and a baby blanket for use in the cot.

If you intend to use the baby cot when traveling, it is better to use a baby travel cot. This is because these travel baby cots can be folded in seconds to be stored away in a carrying case. It is not always necessary to buy a travel baby cot as most hotels and B & Bs have baby cots for your use.

However, if you intend to use your own travel baby cot for your baby for sanitary reasons, mothers prefer sharing a common baby travel cot amongst them instead of individually investing in a baby travel cot. This is because mothers seldom travel regularly with babies; so investing in baby travel cots for occasional travel seems a waste.

Camping, or travel cots are naturally longer and stronger and meant for use by adults. Camping or tent cots are not that heavy and can be taken when camping, fishing or hunting. It can also be used as an extra bed at home for unexpected guests. Camping cots are made of rugged and heavy bound material that last a lifetime. Its tough steel legs and aluminum wall makes it possible to support a maximum of 350 pounds.

When buying travel cots, make sure that it is light, portable, convenient for storage and can easily be set up and dismantled. Today, some travel cots come with wheels for easy transportation. A piece of advice for camping cots; it is better to have some padding placed on the legs of the tent cot, so that its legs don't tear the tent when in use.

baby - Baby Shower Invitation Wording

Finding the perfect baby shower invitation is hard enough. Finding the perfect baby shower invitation wording is even harder! Baby shower invitation wording should not only reflect the standard information about the event, but should help to set the theme of the party, as well as give a peek of the mother-to-be's personality.

A cordial, proper invitation is the most common for baby shower invitation wording. It is standard and classic, and well-suited for more elegant invitations.

For a family where the arriving baby has older siblings, baby shower invitation wording involving those older siblings is a unique way to involve every member of the family in welcoming the new arrival. This can also assist in easing any resentment older children may feel for their new brother or sister.

If you're something of a poet, or have a cute simple invitation where poetry would look good, you could turn your baby shower invitation wording into a poem as adorably clever as the design on the invitation. This is a creative way to show your talent as well as your invitation information - and is likely to be remembered for years to come. Don't be surprised if, as months progress, you find yourself asked to think of poems to replace other baby shower invitation wording.

Your baby shower invitation wording can be generic, or as specific and unique as the baby itself. Looking at various online sites for inspiration can help you to create baby shower invitation wording that's just right for your invitation. But don't forget to proofread your baby shower before you print the invitations or send the information to the printer! Just as a creative and beautiful invitation can be remembered for a long time to come, so can a minor mistake!

baby - Baby Shower Invitation Wording

baby - What Does a New Baby Need Anyway?

So... there's this cute little baby, & you have to buy some stuff...

The only problem - what the heck are you supposed to buy a new born? What do you really need when you're that age?

Well - it's funny - what you think they need, and what they really need are too completely different things.

My advice about items for babies:

Toys

Babies don't play with toys for at least 3 months (& some find paper bags far more interesting up until 12 months of age) - if you're going to buy toys, just buy something that is colourful & will hang above the babies cot, providing some enjoyment.

New-born clothes

Do you know how long a baby lasts in those? The average baby probably only needs about 5 sets of (really adorable) new born onesies (you know the little suits that cover them from neck to toe) - and, if "mum" has been really excited (or the baby has older siblings) - you can bet your bottom dollar, that she's already got 5.

If you are buying clothes for a gift - find out what the mother has, or buy some slightly older clothes - clothes that will fit a 3 month, or 6 month baby.

Blankets

Blankets are great - especially the polar fleece type ones (depending on where you live & how hot it gets - if too hot, substitute blankets for sheets).

If you have too many you can get really creative - put some holes in the blanket for the seatbelt & turn it into a car-seat blanket. Sew the edges of it together & make a cheap sleeping bag for when watching TV.

Make the blankets into panels - sew them together & make a quilt for when the baby gets older.

Diapers

Great - sure to be used. If you are giving diapers as a gift, first find out if the parents use disposables. If they are dead against diapers, you may be insulting them.

Flannels/Wipes

The one thing that I bought the least of, but used the most - baby flannels. These are awesome. You have no idea how many times (in the first few months) your sweet little baby is going to puke all over the place, poop all over the place, & just make a general mess!

Flannels are the best for at home (because you generally need something you can get really wet), and the wipes are fantastic for the car.

Car Seat

Of course this is essential - one word of advice - make sure you get a capsule one, that turns into a bigger seat.

You're better off renting a capsule (rather than buying one), because the baby isn't in it for long enough.

Radio

The soft singing (or talking) on a radio is sure to lull any baby off to sleep. If you can afford it, purchase one of the baby CD's - although most parents will find they don't need it, the radio does the perfect job!

Cot

Your best bet here is to buy a basinette/cot combo. The basinette is higher than the cot, & the parent can move (or change) a sleeping baby with ease. You need to move the baby into the cost by the age of 3 months (by which time he is moving about too much & may fall out of the basinette). So, if you can buy a basinette that converts into a cot (& even better, a bed for later on) you've saved yourself a whole lot of money.

Stroller/Baby Carrier

This really depends on the baby. I used to carry my baby around a lot, because he was quite unsettled - in which case a baby carrier (& one that's easy to use!! Try it out before you buy it) is the best item. A stroller is great for settled babies - get one that you can move into the sleeping position for when your baby nods off (which is constantly for about the first 6 months). When your baby gets older, a toddler stroller is fantastic - not only for when your little darling gets tired, it also keeps sticky hands from breaking everything thing in the shop!

Camera

You'll want a good camera (preferably a digital one), so you can take loads of photos of your sweetpea.

&... that's about it! If you are looking for some great products check out our baby products section of Grizzlynut.

baby - What Does a New Baby Need Anyway?

baby - Most Popular Baby Names

Not everybody is into using a popular baby name for their little ones these days and it's not because the current "trends" don't have pretty or interesting names, but because some baby names are popular today, this spring or this summer but they might be obsolete next day or next year. So the current popularity of a certain name shouldn't be a decisive factor when choosing your newly born's name, but it's ok to take the current trends as a sort of guiding line to show you where names are going.

Different online lists are made each year, where thousands of people vote for the most popular baby names and different ranks are given to each, judging by their popularity. We decided to share a few popular baby names by placing them in different categories as shown below. The first category containing few popular baby names is the Christian names category.

There is a large variety of parents that name their babies after characters that can be found in the Bible, as these names have a special resonation to them. If you're in this category, make sure you choose a name after a character that did something beautiful, or did something worth mentioning, not someone that is portrayed in a negative light in the Bible. A few of the most popular baby names that are taken directly from the Bible include Joshua (a character from the Bible whose name means 'God is salvation'; it is a message and Christian people tend to like these types of messages), or Abigail, a popular Christian baby name that means 'Joy of the Father'.

The second category in which there are a few popular baby names is the origin category. A lot of future parents will want to choose exotic names based on their origins and a name like Aaliyah is perfect for the opportunity. Aaliyah is an Arabic name with an interesting meaning: 'Sublime'. The name sounds really unique and beautiful and it has become an even more popular baby girl name after the R&B singer with the same name became famous. Ailani is another popular baby name because of its exotic origins (Hawaiian roots). The meaning of the name is 'High chief'.

Our next category of popular baby names is based on the originality of the name. For this type of category, only a certain personal pattern applies for parents. The originality of a name can be chosen by parents who live a non-conformist lifestyle and have a powerful and non-judgmental personality. They will be able to come up with an original, truly unique name that may not mean anything, but it might simply sound beautiful. This is an increasingly popular type of baby names.

No matter which of these categories you find yourself into, make sure you don't choose a popular baby name for your little one simply because of some list where people vote and rank the names. Think about all aspects that a name affects and decide what's best for your little boy or girl.

baby - Most Popular Baby Names

baby - Anemia and Your Premature Baby

Anemia is a deficiency of the red blood cells required by the body to carry hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is necessary because it carries oxygen through the blood into all parts of the body keeping it alive. Hemoglobin levels should be higher than 15 grams or it is considered too low.

Low levels of red blood cells are quite common among premature babies, and many times preemies require a transfusion of red blood cells, especially premature babies under 1,000 grams. There are a many reasons why a premature baby may develop anemia. First of all, during the first few weeks of life premature babies' bodies do not make many new red blood cells, and the red blood cells their bodies do have do not last as long as older children.

Blood loss is another reason that a premature baby can become anemic. Premature babies can have bleeding problems that can increase their risk of developing anemia, and one serious problem is Intraventricular Hemorrhage (IVH). A premature baby can also develop anemia if her blood is drawn too frequently.

Studies are being done on iron supplements for premature babies, and how they will be administered if they are found to be effective. Right now transfusions are the best and safest way to increase the iron in your premature baby's blood. Symptoms of anemia (low iron in the blood) are pale skin, lethargy, poor feeding, tackypnea, and tackycardia.

baby - Anemia and Your Premature Baby

baby - Hostess Etiquette For Baby Showers- How to Make the Best of a Stinky Situation

You have spent countless hours putting the perfect plans together for a successful baby shower. You've done your homework. Making sure the schedule does not conflict with Sally's ballgame and Suzie's pool party.

Congratulations! Your hard work and effort will pay off with a successful baby shower.

You have prepared for that special moment, but are you prepared for handling an uncomfortable situation, should it occur?

Conquering hostess etiquette can help smooth out uncomfortable baby shower situations that can crop up.

No matter how hard you try to flawlessly put together that perfect baby shower....things can sometimes happen out of your control. What you do in those critical situations can make a big difference on the comfort level of your guests and pregnant guest of honor.

You know that you cannot accommodate everyone's schedule. When things so south, as they sometimes do, the way you handle the situation can make or break the baby shower.

So, what do you do when your 20 guests turn to 2 or 3? This is a time when tact can go far. Never make any comments about the amount or lack of people at the baby shower. This might cause the pregnant mom's hormones to start the tears flowing!

As soon as you have an indication that the guest list has fizzled, cater the baby shower to the guests that have made the effort to arrive. Don't let the conversation get uncomfortable because you are waiting for a little longer to start the games, hoping more people will show.

Keep in mind the typical baby shower ranges from 2-3 hours in length. Most people will not mind ending a little early, as long as you make an effort to stick to a basic activity, game, gifts and then food schedule.

Here are some Hostess Etiquette tricks that can help smooth out this sticky situation...

*Always start the beginning of the baby shower with an activity. This will keep awkward conversations and long silence at a minimum. By the end of the activity, the guests would have had sufficient time to arrive.

*Cater the games to the amount of people at the shower. If the game you have chosen only works for a big crowd, simply do not play that game.

*Prepare for unforeseen game problems with 1 or 2 smaller, intimate games for the smaller groups.

*If you do not have a game that works, you can use more time than usually on the activity. Most of the time, people do not mind decorating something in place of a game.

*If you do need to stall for time- pull out a camcorder and ask the guests to talk about how they know the parents and have them give advice for raising kids.

*When all else fails, start the food before the gifts to give people a chance to "eat" up some time.

What if there are conflicts with the baby shower? Perhaps people do RSVP but most state that they can only stay for a little portion of the baby shower due to another previous engagement.

In this situation, you can have some appetizers at the beginning of the baby shower with the activity. Then after 1 or 2 games, open the gifts so those guests that need to leave can do so.

Other guests can then move on to the food or also have the chance to leave if they do not want to stick around and chat.

Hostess Etiquette will always work in your favor if you keep in mind the feelings of your guests and mommy to be.

baby - Baby Showers And Gifts - What The Hostess Should Consider

There may be questions concerning a baby shower and gifts. What kind of gifts, when are the gifts opened, thank-yous for the gifts, etc. These are all questions you may have if you are planning your first baby shower or even if it's been awhile since you hosted a baby shower.

If you are hosting the shower should you also give a gift? Usually the person who gives the shower will also give a gift but that is up to the hostess. You may choose to give the shower as your gift or you may give the mom-to-be an extra gift as well.

You know the new mom wants a lovely crib and you decide that it would make a great gift for the shower. All you need to do is to let everyone know that this is the plan and if they would like to go in on the gift you will be collecting the money. Have a card ready for each person to sign as they make the contribution. You can then purchase the crib or other big-purchase item and have it wrapped and ready to give to the new mom at the shower. If you end up with more money than you need to make the purchase you can buy a crib sheet, blankets or other smaller items on the gift registry.

Speaking of the gift registry. It is always a great idea to put the store or stores where the mom-to-be is registered on the invitation. Parents fill out gift registries for a reason. They can choose the gifts they really would love to have. Instead of choosing bedding in a train pattern that you personally prefer consider the jungle animal bedding listed on the gift registry instead. And while you may be crazy about those lovely ceramic sculptures depicting mother and child, not everyone is and that may be why they are not listed on the registry.

Back to the big gift. If this is what you decided to do, how will you present it? You could simply bring it into the room where the shower is being held and give it to the new mom. You could hide it and design a game around finding it. Maybe you want to roll it in at the last minute and surprise her. It's up to you how dramatic you want to get when it comes to giving the big gift.

If there are many guests at the baby shower and many gifts, how do you keep track of everything? You make sure you have provided a notebook and a reliable recorder. The recorder will keep track of all the gifts and who gave them. This list can be given to the mom-to-be and she will have a complete list for her thank-you notes. Want to make this even easier for your guest of honor? Provide the thank-you notes at the baby shower and have all the guests address the envelopes.

Baby shower and gifts, think of all the possibilities!

baby - Baby Showers And Gifts - What The Hostess Should Consider

baby - Choosing a Baby Sitter

Like every other parent you too want to protect your children from anything harmful. Becoming a parent comes with its own insecurities and protectiveness is a natural outcome. However, despite our utmost efforts it might not always be possible for us to save our children from everything. This is a crushing thought. But it is true. And the only way of consoling ourselves is by pledging to take intelligent decisions and prioritizing the safety of our children at all times. Choosing a babysitter is one time when the pledge has to be put into action.

It's not tough to find a babysitter, which means that there are plenty of options to choose from. But don't let this make you think that choosing a babysitter is an easy task. A babysitter is the person you are going to leave your kid alone with and such a person needs to be chosen with a lot of caution. Not only do you have to make sure that the person you choose is qualified for the job you must also ensure that they are not potentially harmful to your child. This means that deciding who the right candidate is is a time consuming and intensely difficult job.

Most of us turn to our own parents when looking for a baby sitter for our children. This maybe a natural move but it may not be the wisest choice. Your parents might mean well and may be crazy about your kids but at their age they might be able to keep up with the demands of childcare. Do consider, objectively, if your parents are physically capable of keeping up with your child before handing them the babysitter's job. A number of young grandparents are often fantastic babysitters, especially due to their former experience with children. But if they are older and have physical constraints they might find it difficult to meet your baby's needs.

While deciding whether or not to let your parents baby-sit for you therefore always take their age into consideration. Do they have health concerns of their own? Will they be physically equipped to deal with any extreme situation like say an accident of some sort? Is keeping up with your child going to tire them or make them ill? Also take into consideration your kid's age. If your baby is an infant then they will be easier to sit for cause they do precious little. But if they are toddlers, fond of running around and playing games, your parents might find it difficult to run around with them. Choosing someone outside your family has its own problems. It's not easy to be able to judge a person from a single meeting or interview thus its highly difficult to decide whether an individual might prove to be harmful for your kid. All you can do to satisfy yourself is ask for recommendations from previous employers, find out how much experience he/she has and if he/she can deal with your kid. Do remember to utilize this information. Call the prior employers and check on your babysitter's background. Finally relax, and tell yourself that everything will be ok.

baby - Choosing a Baby Sitter

baby - 4 Simple Steps For Hosting the Perfect Baby Shower

No need to go overboard on the upcoming baby shower you are hosting! Just follow these simple steps, and you will be off and running towards baby shower success!

Free Baby Shower Game Ideas:

Scoop It Up! For this game, open up a bag of cotton balls and place them in a large bowl. Set an empty bowl beside it. Instruct the guests that they are to scoop as many cotton balls as possible from one to the other while blindfolded. Hand the first player a wooden spoon and blindfold them. Give them 30 seconds to scoop up as many cotton balls as possible and place them in the second bowl. This is challenging because the balls are so light that you have no idea how many cotton balls you have, if any. Count the cotton balls after each guest plays. The guest with the most wins! Fun and simple!

Ice Cube Game! Buy a package of tiny plastic babies (found at craft stores) and freeze them in ice cubes. Give each guest a cup with water and an ice cube with a baby in it. The first one whose baby is 'born' wins!

Don't Say Baby! The object of this game is to NOT say the word 'baby.' When guests arrive, hand everyone a clothespin or safety pin. If someone catches you saying 'baby' during the course of the shower, she gets your pin. The person with the most pins at the end of the baby shower wins a prize.

When Will The Baby Come! Take a page or two from a calendar and have it enlarged on a copy machine (at your local copy shop). Pin the page(s) up on the wall at the baby shower and have guests sign their name on the date they think the baby will be born along with what time he/she will be born. You can either have each guest pay a dollar to place a bet and give the winner the money, or you can have everyone play for free and the winner gets a prize. The prize will have to be given after the shower so you might want to get phone numbers to call the winner.

Baby Shower Decoration Ideas:

For a great baby shower decoration idea, and to avoid having to pass all of the presents around the room: hang a clothesline (heavy yarn or string) across the room and put clothespins on it, every time the mom-to-be opens a cute outfit, receiving blanket, socks, or a bib, hang it up on the clothesline, so everyone can see it. Very cute!

Sprinkle baby-themed confetti all around countertops and tables

Fill empty baby food jars with jelly beans and top with a t-lite candle

Decorate tables with baby bottle vases! Fill baby bottles with water and put daisies in them!

Use teething rings and baby key rings as napkin rings

For a baby shower centerpiece, fill a baby bath or mini red wagon with tons of baby good! Socks, onesies, bibs, stuffed animals, you get the idea...then give it to the mom-to-be as your gift to her!

Baby Shower Cake/Invitation Wording Ideas:

Oh Baby!

Happy Labor Day!

True Blue!

A Giggle, A Curl, A Sweet Little Girl!

Baby Shower Punch Recipes:
Serve some festive baby shower punch and float cute little rubber duckies in them! Be sure tto make blue punch for a boy and pink for a girl!

Blue Baby Shower Punch Recipe:

1 package blue, berry flavored unsweetened drink mix

1 (2 liter) bottle lemon-lime flavored soda

1 (64 fluid ounce) bottle white cranberry juice

8 scoops vanilla ice cream

1 cup white sugar, or to taste

In a large punch bowl, stir together the drink mix, lemon-lime soda, and white cranberry juice. Taste, and stir in sugar to your liking. (I like to add the whole cup.) Float scoops of ice cream on the top. The ice cream melts somewhat and turns the punch a beautiful baby blue color with frothy white clouds floating on the top.

Perfect Pink Baby Shower Punch:

1/2 cup fine granulated sugar

1/2 cup lemon juice

1 pint raspberry sherbet

1 cup orange juice

2 cups cranberry juice cocktail

28 ounces ginger ale, chilled

Combine the first four ingredients in a punch bowl and stir until sugar is dissolved. Spoon in sherbet. Pour ginger ale over all.

Serve some simple baby shower snacks such as croissants with ham and cheese, a veggie platter, some strawberries and a bowl of mixed nuts.

Now that you're all set, remember to relax and have fun! This baby shower is going to be a blast!

baby - Celebrity Baby Names: What's In A Name?

What is it with celebrities and what they name their babies?

Decades ago we had Frank Zappa, who named two of his kids Moon Unit and Dweezil - but we sort of expect that from a rock star, don't we? To top it off, he named his other two kids Ahmet Emuukha Rodan and Diva - so at least in that family they all have rather unique names.

I admit that I thought it was pretty cool when Demi and Bruce named one of their daughters Scout, in honor of the young heroine from "To Kill A Mockingbird" - but then they went and named the other two Rumor and Tallulah Belle. Not sure why they did that - thankfully they seem like nice, normal kids.

No need to discuss what Michael Jackson named his children - that's the least of his, or their worries, frankly.

I had a cat named Coco when I was a child, and now David and Courtney Cox Arquette have a daughter named Coco. And how about Apple for a name? Seriously, why would an Academy Award winning actress name her child Apple? Will Gwenyth name the one she's expecting this spring Banana? Or maybe go with something from the vegetable family?

Don't get me wrong - I think trying to find a unique name for your child is wonderful. There are more than enough Bob's in the world right now (my husband being one of them). But aren't there better ways of choosing a name for your baby than drawing a name out of a hat or trying to recall what you ate just before conception? And isn't life already going to be hard enough for these celebrity kids without being saddled with bizarre names?

Not all celebrities have given their offspring strange names. Thankfully, Britney Spears named her son Sean, and Kate Winslet chose the simple, but strong, Joe for her son. And there are lots of celebrity sons named Jack and Henry out there, along with a few Grace and Samantha's, so not all is lost.

But what I wonder is if celebrities know there are "Baby Naming" books out there to help them. Years ago we got one of those books when we considered starting a family. With the last name Ryder, of course we played around with some fun names - like Ezekiel Zechariah - E.Z. Ryder. Or Paperback. Maybe Horseback. But would we have actually done that? Of course not. Well, at least not Paperback or Horseback. Then, when we didn't have children, we used the book to name our pets. We may be the only people in the world with a Siamese Cat named Dugan - and actually know what it means! And we used the book to offer "helpful" suggestions to family and friends.

These books are great - not only do you get thousands of possible names, you also get their heritage and meaning. So if any of you know Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, I have a suggestion for the perfect baby shower gift for them - a baby naming book. Or who knows what those two might come up with for a name. I shudder even thinking about it.

baby - Celebrity Baby Names: What's In A Name?

baby - Genital Hygiene for the Smallest Ones

AS A RULE, young mother have lots of questions. A baby is so small, he requires constant care and attention, and you're afraid of hurting him. Genital hygiene causes especially many troubles. As for girls, here we can make for ourselves. But we understand nothing about boys. Let's learn this science by ourselves.

Genital hygiene should be treated very carefully since the very birth. Otherwise, strangury, different inflammations or problems in youth age can occur. In fact, there's nothing difficult here, you just need to learn several simple rules.

Boys

During first week, boys can suffer from scrotum edema. Genitals look too big and swelled up. You should not be worried. This is connected with the fact that through placenta or breast milk an excessive quantity of maternal hormones penetrates into a new-born baby's organism. As a rule, this edema disappears in several days. But if such edema still presents by the end of the second week, apply for a doctor immediately.

Intimate hygiene for boys means regular (while each change of a diaper) washing of genitals with warm water. Doing this, you should move a skin wrinkle (foreskin) off a head of a penis necessarily. Fatty substance (smegma) is accumulated there, which should be removed. If you see reddening on foreskin, then you need to cleanse it with a cotton tampon, moistened in a light (light-pink) manganese solution or bur-marigold extract several times a day.

Sometimes, foreskin can be very narrow and does not allow baring a head of penis completely. In such case, it's desirable to apply for a doctor as soon as possible. As a rule, a surgeon just needs to make a small cut of a skin wrinkle. And the earlier he does such operation, the better.

If a baby has very sensitive skin, then you may sometimes do just "dry" washing with the help of wet or oiled tissues. You should wash a baby's genitals with soap no less than once in 4-5 days.

Girls

In the end of the first week of a girl's life you may notice mucous excreta or excreta with some blood. As a rule, they disappear by itself in 2-3 days. This is also connected with excessive amount of maternal hormones coming to a girls' organism. During this period, a baby needs careful care. Diapers should be changed every 1,5-2 hours. If excreta still take place for more than 3 days, you need to apply for a doctor.

Girls' genitals are very sensitive and have rather low resistibility to different infections. The most common "female" disease of new-born babies is vulvitis (inflammation of external genitals). So, keep them clean and warm all the time. Every time you change a diaper, wash your daughter with warm water. You can wash her either under tap or with a cotton tampon moistened in water. Move from pubis to coccyx, to prevent excesses of excrement from coming to genitals. Soap should also be used no more than once in 4-5 days, to prevent skin from getting too dry.

And yet, try not to take a great interest in babies' cosmetics. Use various creams, oils and powders only in case of need (while irritations and diaper rashes), not regularly. Otherwise you will break a natural protective skin layer of a new-born.

baby - Genital Hygiene for the Smallest Ones

Otherwise you will break a natural protective skin layer of a new-born.

baby - Baby Cribs - Safety Is Key

You have just learned that you are expecting a baby. Even if you have other children, you must take a look at cribs. Is the crib you already have an antique? You should look carefully at your second hand crib whether it is an antique or not.

The safety of your new baby makes this necessary. The screws and/or other fasteners such as bolts must be in place and not loose. It is of the utmost importance that this is tested before you place your baby in the crib.

Take something that is almost equal to your 4-month-old baby's weight. In order to be certain that it will hold its position bounce it off the mattress. If it doesn't your baby could be hurt seriously or worse. When you set up your nursery, if it isn't set-up already, seriously consider where you will place your crib.

If you have to place the crib near a window with Venetian blinds, you can either shorten the cords or anchor them to prevent your baby from reaching and getting hold of them. Avoid, if possible placing the crib near the window. As your baby grows into a toddler and begins to climb out of the crib, s/he could become seriously injured in a fall.

Blankets are not necessarily a good idea to use with your baby. Be sure that you avoid anything that could put your baby at risk, especially in the light of SIDS incidents today. The most advisable way to put your baby to bed is in a blanket sleeper.

Make sure to tuck the blanket tightly around and under the foot of the mattress with you baby's feet touching the footboard if you must have a blanket on your baby. You also want to help prevent your baby from sliding under the blanket and suffocating by not putting the blanket any higher than his chest.

There is a risk of your baby slipping between the mattress and the bumper pads causing suffocation, if bumper pads, which are a great concept, are not secured properly. Bumper pads if used should be fastened in each of the four corners and evenly spaced on each of the two sides. There should be sixteen ties in all, eight for the top and eight for the bottom.

Although mobiles are nice additions you need to take a precaution to prevent your baby from getting entangled in it. It must be removed when your baby starts sitting up by himself. You must also check to see if there are small parts that are removable that your baby could choke on.

No matter is your crib is second hand or one you had for a previous child, or you got it from someone else, the mattress must by checked out carefully. The mattress covering should be checked for any holes or cracks.

The mattress must fit in the crib properly. Your baby could slip between the mattress and side or end bars and suffocate if you are not careful. The mattress should be snug in the crib. The sheets you use in your baby crib should fit properly and not slip and slide.

There are sheet hooks available that attach to the sheet under the mattress and keep it in place. Placing the mattress in the proper position is extremely important to your baby's safety. When the baby comes home most parents put the mattress in the highest position because it is easier to reach the baby and change him.

Lower the mattress according to the growth and activity of your baby. If your baby can come to a standing position in the crib the mattress should be put in the lowest position and to add to his safety you should measure the distance between the mattress and the top of the sidebar.

There should be no more than 26 inches from the top of the side bar to the mattress when it is in the lowest position. Moving your child to a regular bed might be a good idea if your child is climbing out of the crib or his head is above the side bar.

There are convertible cribs that become beds and grow with your child. Inspect your child's crib to be sure there is nothing that will put your baby at risk. The ornate designs carved into the end boards of cribs are beautiful but could pose a hazard to your child. Have you seen them?

Your child could be injured if his head, arm, or leg get caught in them and possibly sustain an injury. A simpler design may increase your child's safety. Safety guidelines from 1974 for cribs state that slats should be no more than 2 and 3/8th inches apart; to keep your baby from getting his head caught between the slats.

Your baby's safety could be compromised if getting stuck caused him injury and necessitating the removal of some slats.

baby - Baby Cribs - Safety Is Key

baby - Irish Baby Names

Each country has its own set of unique names. There are names such as Tobias and Lena in Austria; Connor and Paige in Canada; Pedro and Juana in Chile; Matej and Katerina in the Czech Republic; Rasmus and Freja in Denmark; Harry and Charlotte in Wales and England; Aleksi and Iida in Finland; Quentin and Oceane in France; Luca and Sophie in Germany; Bjarni and Helga in Iceland; Shota and Riko in Japan; Thijs and Lotte in the Netherlands; and Marek and Agnieszka in Poland.

In Ireland, baby names are usually coined by combining both Irish and foreign names. This practice reflects the rich cultural diversity that can be found in the country. In 2004, popular baby names for boys were Sean, Jack, Conor, Adam, James, Daniel, Cian, Luke, Michael, Aaron, Dylan, David, Ryan, Eoin, Darragh, Jamie, Bem, Oisin and Shane. On the other hand, the top baby names for girls were Emma, Katie, Sarah, Amy, Aoife, Ciara, Sophie, Chloe, Leah, Niamh, Ella, Caoimhe, Emily, Kate, Rachel, Hannah, Lauren, Ava and Megan.

Like all names, Irish baby names have their own special meanings. These meanings come from different origins. For example, Aaron is actually a name from the Bible. In Ireland, however, it also means "high mountain." Baethan is a male Irish name that means "little foolish one." Clare is "bright" in Latin. However, this name is used in Ireland in honor of St. Clare of Assisi. Desmond is a place in Ireland. Ennis is a female Irish name that is derived from the capital of County Clare. Fidelma is a feminine name and is very commonly used in Ireland. Hannah, a variation of the name Anne, which was once commonly used throughout Ireland. There also is the female Irish name Izett, which is another form of the name Iseult.

baby - Irish Baby Names

baby - What to Get a New Baby

Baby Gifts

Having a baby is an amazing experience for the new parents, but at the same time it can be hard to cope with. You can help make life a little bit easier for the happy parents by giving them a baby gift that assists the transition from couple to family. It's easy to buy something cute for a baby, but there are also many helpful and practical gifts that will really make a difference. You'll also know that your gift will get used plenty of times, rather than admired and then shoved in a cupboard.

One great gift you can give is a baby monitor. These clever devices monitor the sounds made by baby while sleeping, so that mum or dad can get on with other things that need to be done and can immediately hear when baby wakes up. They're also useful at night, because you'll know very quickly when baby is awake and wanting to be fed.

New parents tend to worry a lot about their baby's health, so why not give them something to assist them? Digital baby thermometers are simple to use and much less intrusive than the old fashioned thermometers. You can buy thermometers that take the temperature orally, from the skin and in the ear. Great for reassuring a nervous parent that baby is fine, but also for indicating when a visit to the doctor might be required.

If you'd still like to buy something cute and fun, then check out the range of crib items. There are heaps of great ideas available, including toys that attach to the inside of the crib and use music and lights to help lull baby to sleep. Perhaps you could choose a mechanical mobile with cute decorations for amusing baby. Look at the Lamaze range of baby toys, designed to be fun and interesting for baby, while stimulating various senses at the same time. Great for development.

You can also choose baby blankets, sheets, towels, washcloths and a whole lot more, all available in a wide variety of styles and colors. Look for cute but practical clothing, including sleepwear, onesies, socks, jackets and t-shirts. Always test out the clothes to make sure they're easy to put on and take off again, and that it's easy to access the nappy for a quick change, without having to completely undress the baby.

If the new parents need some more expensive baby items, why not join together with some other friends to buy a bigger baby gift. This is a great way to give parents items like strollers, cribs, car seats or playpens. You can either organize to purchase the item yourself, or give the new parents a gift certificate to cover the cost and let them choose their own. Another useful gift is diapers. Either buy plenty to keep the parents going for a while, or if they like cloth diapers, organize a diaper service. They'll take away the dirty diapers once a week, wash them, and then bring them back again. Any new parents will love you for that gift!

Baby gifts are a wonderful way to get the new family started in their life together, and you can do a lot to help that process. Don't waste your money and something cute that will never even get taken out of the box. Try to combine practical and fun, and the new parents will thank you for it - over and over again.

baby - What to Get a New Baby

baby - Tips on Baby Names

Of all the discomforts you will experience during pregnancy, pains during your labor and other tenderness you may feel for the whole nine months, choosing baby names can make all you sufferings worthwhile.

Naming a baby can be as easy as using your grandfather's name or naming your baby using the month he or she was born, for instance, May. Some parents seem to argue for the whole nine months of pregnancy and then end up choosing baby names instantly when they see him or her and discovers a particular name just "fits".

As parents of the soon-to-be-born child, everyone around you will be giving out suggestions in choosing baby names. Although you may receive a few unique names you'd love your child to have, picking only one name from the hundreds of rare and meaningful collection can be a very confusing decision.

Nine Months Of Research: Still Not Enough? After pregnancy, your child will be his or her own identity. The first responsibility you will perform is deciding the name of your child, which he or she will be using for the rest of their lives. Since each pregnancy takes nine months, you have all the time in the world to prepare for your first responsibility.

However, since your child's gender will not be revealed until the 5th month of pregnancy, your choosing a baby name as early as discovering the pregnancy test is positive may not be such a good idea. If you have settled on a baby girl's name and it turned out to be a boy, your entire research and debating will all be useless.

Once you have determined the gender of your child, you and your partner can now list down your favorite names for a boy (if your baby is a boy). When you list down the names, don't dwell on each name too much. Just keep adding a few names on that list for the next weeks to come.

Never choose a baby name on your own. During pregnancy, a woman's physical and emotional state changes, making you more vulnerable to stress and other illnesses. For this reason, you should ensure that your partner, family and friends give suggestions to make things easier.

Some partners enter a never-ending debate when choosing baby names. Before starting the brainstorming, make sure that you have an agreement with your partner to pick a name that both of you will like. Although there will be some names that you will love while your partner won't and vice versa, be patient because the perfect name will just present itself to you before your pregnancy labor.

It's All In The Name When you have put together a complete list of names, you can now judge each name on the list. The best way to see if a name will suit your child is to add a last name to the "proposed" name. Add the child's middle name and recite the complete name several times. When you hear the complete name at first, you may like the sound of it, but as you continue to recite it, you may think that the name is not good enough.

If you want a meaningful name, check your list of baby names and research their definitions. This is important because as your child grows up and faces other children, his or her playmates may create alternatives and other spellings of your given name that can lead to unfavorable nicknames.

When eight months have passed and your pregnancy will soon be over, you should decide on at least four names. This will ensure that if the baby comes, you won't be arguing on what name should be written on the birth certificate.

baby - Tips on Baby Names

baby - A Good Night's Rest - The Importance of Bedtime Routines for Babies

When it comes to babies, usually everyone around you suddenly considers themselves an expert and knows exactly what you should be doing in any given situation. Often, the advice given by one person is in conflict with the advice given by someone else. This can be confusing, especially for new parents.

Perhaps one of the most discussed issues is sleep. Many new parents will expect to get precious little of it for a while, yet secretly hope that the newborn will be one of those amazing babies who will sleep through the night straight away. This is natural. Nobody yearns to be woken up several times a night.

Most newborn babies, though, have a bit of an erratic sleeping pattern, especially for the first six to twelve weeks. After this time, you can help settle your baby into a more regular sleeping pattern, if you are consistent.

Each mother has a different approach to this, a different tactic they think you should use. Only you, as the parent, will know what is best for your baby and your family. My advice is to use the knowledge you have of your baby to decide on the best way to settle them into sleep. Nobody knows your baby better than you.

Babies need a lot of sleep. For a newborn, sixteen to eighteen hours a day is average and all babies need plenty of shut-eye. They just don't always sleep when you want them to. However, it will get easier when you establish a routine and keep to a consistent bedtime as much as possible.

Bedtime rituals are important. If you follow the same routine each evening, the baby will learn to associate this pattern with the time to go to sleep. A bath, a bedtime story, a cuddle and so on, a calm and soothing time together will help the baby relax and learn that bedtime is not something to get worked up about.

If your baby spends a lot of time crying during the night, most experts recommend against letting your little one "cry it out". Though you certainly needn't rush in at the first little whimper, if your baby is still crying after a few minutes, it is good to go and check what is the problem. It is advisable not to pick up your baby straight away, otherwise he might think crying = being picked up. Keep everything low-key, try and soothe him with your hand and voice, talk softly for a while and see if he'll go back to sleep.

In the morning, when you wake your baby, fuss over him a bit more, let him associate the morning and the daylight with the time for attention and happiness, a time to be awake and be with you.

Once your baby learns that sleep is something pleasant, and nothing to be worried about, odds are that all your lives will start becoming that bit simpler, and that you will all get a good night's rest.

Again, the best person to judge which tactics to use to help establish this rhythm, is you. There are many pieces of advice out on the Internet, and experiences shared by other new parents. It can take about ten weeks for a baby to get used to a bedtime routine, so please don't give up too easily. If it really does not work, do not be afraid to try something different, but again, do be consistent with your new routine to allow your baby to learn.

I wish you good luck and many restful nights.

baby - A Good Night's Rest - The Importance of Bedtime Routines for Babies

When it comes to babies, usually everyone around you suddenly considers themselves an expert and knows exactly what you should be doing in any given situation. Often, the advice given by one person is in conflict with the advice given by someone else. This can be confusing, especially for new parents.

Perhaps one of the most discussed issues is sleep. Many new parents will expect to get precious little of it for a while, yet secretly hope that the newborn will be one of those amazing babies who will sleep through the night straight away. This is natural. Nobody yearns to be woken up several times a night.
